A 3-week professional musical production workshop culminating in two performances of the Tony nominated musical revue

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s 

A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING  

Performances will be held on Saturday July 13, 2013 in the beautiful Huntington Beach Central Library Theater

The Summer Musical Production Workshop meets daily Monday through Thursday from 1:00pm – 5:00pm beginning Monday June 24 on the Golden West College campus. The Workshop ends with two performances on Saturday July 13 featuring all workshop members.

No audition required. If you can sing, you will appear in the performance. If you do not sing, you will be part of stage management or stage crew. Each day, workshop members will have lessons in singing, dancing, technical theater, and stage management as they rehearse Rodgers & Hammerstein’s A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING in preparation for the performances on July 13. The Summer Musical Production Workshop will be directed and choreographed by Martie Ramm with musical direction by Rick Heckman.

Participants must be available on all days of the workshop and the performances

George Orwell’s 1984

October 11-20, 2013

George Orwell’s chilling prophecy of a totalitarian future comes to life in this riveting new stage adaptation by Michael Gene Sullivan.  Directed by Tom Amen.

Though the era in which the novel is set has passed us by, 1984 could not be more timely in its stark vision of a world in which freedom of deed, word, even thought, are subjugated by the state. As the story of one lone man’s fight for individual identity unfolds, Orwell’s unsettling nightmare grows increasingly terrifying as the bureaucratic purgatory it depicts grows uncomfortably familiar. Brilliant in its depiction of a New World Order controlled by tyranny, propaganda, group-think, and the cult of personality, 1984 remains a haunting and desperate cry for the preservation of liberty in our own time.

Irving Berlin’s WHITE CHRISTMAS

“May your days be merry and bright; and may all your Christmases be white.”  Based on one of the best Christmas movies ever, WHITE CHRISTMAS features seventeen Irving Berlin songs including Blue Skies, I Love A Piano, Count Your Blessings, Sisters and the classic holiday favorite and most-recorded tune in history, White Christmas.  The book, by David Ives and Paul Blake, tells the story of the successful song-and-dance team Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, both World War II army veterans, who become romantically involved with a sister act and team up to save the failing Vermont inn of their former commanding general.  When lack of snow threatens to shut the doors for good, the couples stage a show to keep the hearth fires burning.  WHITE CHRISTMAS is a heartwarming musical, a lavish holiday spectacle and perfect entertainment for the entire family.

LOVE, LOSS AND WHAT I WORE

LOVE, LOSS AND WHAT I WORE is a play of monologues and ensemble pieces about women, clothes and memory that covers all the important subjects—mothers, prom dresses, mothers, buying bras, mothers, hating purses and why we only wear black.  Based on the bestselling book by Ilene Beckerman, LOVE, LOSS AND WHAT I WORE uses clothing, accessories and the memories they trigger to tell funny and often poignant stories about matters of the heart and matters of the closet.

THE GREAT GATSBY

The Jazz Age comes alive once more in Simon Levy’s delicate and haunting stage adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novella. When a young man, Nick Carraway, arrives at a guest cottage on Long Island, he is quickly drawn into the glamorous world of self-made millionaire, Jay Gatsby, who’s dangerous obsession with the beautiful Daisy Buchanan threatens to cast a dark cloud over one brief, decedent summer. Caught up in a whirlwind of lavish parties, extravagant wealth, and smoldering passion, Nick bears witness to an era when bathtub gin was the national drink and illicit sex was the national pastime. Fueled by money, ambition, and a belief in what Fitzgerald called “The orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us”, Gatsby’s meteoric rise and precipitous fall remains a cautionary meditation on the ever-elusive nature of the American Dream.

NOISES OFF

Called the funniest farce ever written, Noises Off presents a manic menagerie of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop where out-of-control egos, memory loss and passionate affairs turn every performance into a high-risk comedy adventure.  Progressing from flubbed lines and missed cues in rehearsal to mounting friction between cast members in the final performance, Noises Off is a comic triumph of slamming doors, falling trousers and flying sardines!  Non-stop laughing is guaranteed!

Since 1972, the Irene Ryan Foundation of Encino, California, has awarded scholarships to the outstanding student performers at each regional festival. These scholarships are made possible by the generosity of the late Irene Ryan who is best remembered for her portrayal of the lovable and feisty ‘Granny Clampett’ in The Beverly Hillbillies . All student actors in both Participating and Associate productions are eligible for consideration for these $500 regional scholarships.

Started in 1969 by Roger L. Stevens, the Kennedy Center’s founding chairman, the Kennedy Center American College Theater (KCACTF) is a national theater program involving 18,000 students from colleges and universities nationwide which has served as a catalyst in improving the quality of college theater in the United States. The KCACTF has grown into a network of more than 600 academic institutions throughout the country, where theater departments and student artists showcase their work and receive outside assessment by KCACTF respondents.

As the director of TWELVE ANGRY MEN, I am particularly proud of the achievements of the entire cast and crew as well as the efforts of these two fine actors.  Please join me in congratulating them.
